YOUNG SELECTION 03
The third edition of the Young Selection exhibition project builds on the success of previous years, once again offering a fresh perspective on contemporary art. Its aim is to discover and introduce emerging creative talents – artists who are not yet represented by galleries or have had the opportunity to exhibit in major institutions.
This year’s selection features eleven artists chosen by an expert committee made up of representatives of partner institutions and the organisers of Prague Art Week.
Young Selection 03 offers an authentic insight into the freshest voices on the contemporary art scene. The exhibition will take place from 24 to 27 September at The House, a functionalist villa in Prague 6, which is hosting the exhibition for the second time.
This year’s selection is characterised above all by its diversity. Alongside traditional artistic disciplines, the exhibition will present more experimental approaches and works responding to current questions in contemporary art.
“Supporting young talents is always an investment in the future. They bring courage and new perspectives to the art world. What I find particularly important about this year’s exhibition is its remarkable diversity. Visitors should not miss it, as it offers a great opportunity to encounter both traditional approaches and ultracontemporary practices. There is something for everyone.”
Another important criterion in the selection was the artists’ distinctive visual language and their ability to move beyond a purely local context.
“In selecting the artists, I was interested in those with a clearly defined individual language whose work is not confined to a local context. I see Young Selection as an opportunity to present artistic positions that can naturally enter into an international artistic dialogue.”
Alongside artistic quality, the committee also considered the artists’ ability to reflect current trends while offering diverse approaches. The selection therefore brings together works that revisit the tradition of Surrealism, draw on posthumanist thought, or engage with the classical discipline of stone sculpture.
Young Selection also demonstrates how distinctive emerging voices can gradually establish themselves on the Czech art scene. Some artists presented in previous editions are now exhibiting in established galleries, while their work is also entering art collections.
“While Prague Art Week maps the best of art across the city, Young Selection serves as a compass pointing towards the newest talents on the art scene. It is wonderful to now see artists who were presented at Young Selection three years ago appearing in the programmes of established galleries, with some of them also represented in art collections.”
OPEN STUDIOS
On Saturday, 26 September, from 2 to 5 pm, the studios of The House residents will also open to the public as part of the Prague Art Week programme. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the artists’ working environments, including painting and sculpture studios as well as spaces on the upper floor, and to discover works currently in progress.
The participating artists opening their studios are Néphéli Barbas, Mária Jančová, Max van Olffen, Kateřina Rafaelová, Anna-Marie Berdychová, Samuel Stano, Taja Spasskova, Bystrík Klčo and Marianna Stránská.
